Aspects of period as schoolchild in Norfolk and Chingford, 1939-1941: evacuation of Hackney Downs School to Norfolk; accommodation in King's Lynn; effect of evacuation on his education; life in King's Lynn, 1939-1940; return to Chingford, 1940; joining Air Raid Precautions, 8/1940; sight of woman's severed hand; sight of evacuees from Silvertown on 'Black Saturday', 7/9/1940; public morale; listening to radio. Aspects of enlistment and training as boy seaman with Royal Navy in GB, 1941-1942: volunteering for Royal Navy, 1/1941; opinion of basic training as telegraphist at HMS St George, Douglas, Isle of Man; training as radio mechanic at Manchester, 1942; qualifying at HMS Mercury, East Meon.
