Content description

REEL 1 Background in Teddington, GB, 1923-1936: family; education. Aspect of period as private with 6th Bn East Surrey Regt in GB, 1936-1940: enlistment underage in Territorial Army, 1936; basic training at Kingston upon Thames; joining 2/6th Bn East Surrey Regt, 1939; guard duties at Chatham. Recollections of operations as private with Headquarters Coy, 2/6th Bn East Surrey Regt, 1st Armoured Div in France and GB, 1940: move to Abbeville, 23/4/1940; wounding at Saint-Valery-en-Caux, 12/6/1940; evacuation from Saint-Valery-en-Caux; movements on return to GB, 1940-1944; role as Bren Gun operator; meeting with Royal Air Force pilot, GB, summer 1940; use of high octane fuel in vehicles; abandoning positions at Forges-les-Eaux, France, 8/6/1940; wounding by German Army tank fire at Saint-Valery-en-Caux, 12/6/1940. Aspects of period as NCO with British Army in GB, 1940-1944: role as NCO with Night Fighting School at Aldershot Garrison; attending commando course in Scotland; in reinforcement holding unit at Uckfield. REEL 2 Continues: Recollections of operations as NCO with 4th (Hallamshire) Bn, York and Lancaster Regt, 146th Infantry Bde, 49th (West Riding) Infantry Regt in Normandy, France, 6/1944: landing on Gold Beach; posting to battalion; sight of bombing of Caen; capture of German prisoner of war by Joe Lubry; hunt for German Army sniper at crossroads; receiving apology from officer for open arrest incident; wounding by German multi-barrelled mortar fire; evacuation to GB; medical treatment for wounds received in GB, 1944; later work at Woking Demobilisation Centre, 1945; memories of Joe Lubry; opinion of German forces; recapitulation of story of wounding by German multi-barrelled mortar.
