REEL 1 Background in Liverpool and Port Sunlight, GB, 1925-1941: family; education; reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; German Air Force bombing of Port Sunlight; role as despatch rider for Home Guard and Air Raid Precautions; joining Athel Line, 1941. Recollections of period as apprentice aboard MV Athelviking in North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean, 1941-1944: first duties aboard tanker at Birkenhead; first voyage to Aruba, Leeward Islands and Freetown, Sierra Leone; encounter with Royal Netherlands Navy cruiser; reasons why ship sailed out of convoy; supplies carried; German Navy submarine attack off Bandar Abbas, Iran, 22/10/1943; aiding burnt personnel after German Air Force attack at Taranto, Italy, 12/1943; reaction to German Air Force attacks at Taranto, Italy; reaction of crew to having to go to New York, United States of America instead of GB, 12/1943; character of Christmas dinner aboard, 25/12/1943; return to GB, 3/1944; question of personal morale and danger in tankers.
