British seaman served as electrician aboard HMS Ocean in GB coastal waters, Mediterranean, Far East and during Korean War, 1949-1953; petty officer served aboard HMS Launceston Castle in GB coastal waters and North Atlantic, 1953-1955

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Bristol, GB, 1931-1948: family; memories of German Air Force bombing of Bristol during Second World War; apprenticed to Bristol Aeroplane Company Ltd. Aspects of training as electrician with Royal Navy in GB, 1948-1949: basic training at HMS Royal Arthur, Cosham; pattern of electrical training at HMS Defiance at Devonport. Aspects of period as electrician aboard HMS Ocean in GB coastal waters, Mediterranean and Far East, 1949-1952: drafting to carrier; trooping role of carrier carrying troops to Far East; rum ration; routine trooping trips to Far East; leave and redrafting to ship; duties as electrician; use of ship's crane to remove crashed aircraft from flight deck and launch Supermarine Walrus over side. Recollections of operations as electrician aboard HMS Ocean during Korean War, 1952-1953: working up for Korean War service; start of patrols off North Korea. REEL 2 Continues: description of aircraft carrier's electrical system; living conditions; description of aircraft lifts and anchor winches; prior recollection of aircraft carrier losing power on entering harbour at Aden, Aden Protectorate; description of firsts carried out by HMS Ocean including 'pinwheel' operation and first carrier to land jet aircraft; nature of air operations carried out from aircraft carrier; destroyer escort; carrier's wartime working routine; shooting down of Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 by 802 Sqdn, Fleet Air Arm; memories of Captain Charles 'Crash' Evans; loss of twelve aircraft in one day and use of Westland Dragonfly helicopter to rescue ditched aircrew.
