REEL 1 Background in Stockwell and Streatham, London, GB, 1925-1939: family; education including training ship, HMS Exmouth, 1937- 1938. Aspects of period as civilian in Streatham, London, GB, 1939-1942: German Air Force bombing of Streatham; use of Anderson Shelter; public morale; reaction to German Air Force bombing. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy, 1942: enlistment in Royal Navy, 1942; training at HMS Collingwood, Fareham. Recollections of operations aboard HMS Hyderabad in Mediterranean, 1943: drafting to corvette at Southampton; picking wrong place to hang his hammock; living conditions on board; problems with cockroaches; keenness to participate in Arctic convoys; destruction of German submarine U-436 in Bay of Biscay on route to Mediterranean, 26/5/1943.
