REEL 1 Background in Lancaster, 1920-1939: family; education; employment; reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939. Aspects of training as private and officer with Border Regt in GB, 1940- 1942: call-up to Border Regiment, 5/1940; story illustrating inadvisability of correcting NCO at Carlisle, summer 1940; membership of regimental cricket team; three month period at No 165 Officer Cadet Training Unit at Dunbar, 10/1940-12/1940; allocation to signals platoon, 9th Bn Border Regt. Recollections of period as officer with 9th Border Regt in India, 1942-1943: voyage aboard HMT Orcades from GB to British India via South Africa; initial impressions of India; move into Fort William, Calcutta; provision of armed escorts on trains; training with British Indian Army units. REEL 2 Continues: nature of civil disorder; story of incident with mad dog and treatment to prevent rabies; exploits of Royal Air Force pilot against Imperial Japanese Army Air Service over Calcutta; nature of train escort duties; attitude of Indian civilians to British Army troops; supply of reinforcements to battalions in Arakan, Burma; acclimatisation training at Shillong, Assam.
