REEL 1 Background in Deptford, London, GB, 1921-1939: family circumstances; education; employment; reasons for joining Royal Navy, 1939. Aspects of operations as stoker with HMS Berwick, 1st and 3rd Cruiser Sqdns in Mediterranean and North Atlantic, 1940-1942: action against Italians in which shipmate was killed; action against German Admiral Hipper; attitude to role as stoker and application to join the Fleet Air Arm; attempt to influence his draft. Aspects of period as telegraphist air-gunner with Fleet Air Arm, 1943-1945: role and duties; operating with 836 Naval Air Sqdn, Fleet Air Arm from MV Empire MacColl and MV Empire MacCabe; attitude to service with Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm during Second World War.
