REEL 1 Background in Cambridge and Southampton, GB, 1923- 1941: family; education; employment at University of Southampton; building work on bomb damaged houses, 1940; narrow escape during German Air Force attack on Southampton, 1940; question of German intelligence gathering in Southampton during 1930s; reaction to German Air Force bombing. Aspects of period as private and NCO with 70th Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light in GB, 1941-1943: enlistment in British Army, 28/2/1941; character of training at Strensall Barracks, York; coastal defence duties in Norfolk; fate of colleagues from University of Southampton; demotion from corporal to lance corporal at Manby, 1942; request for overseas posting.
