REEL 1 Background in New Ferry, GB, 1932-1939: family circumstances; education. Recollections of period as schoolchild in New Ferry, 1939-1945: German Air Force in area; family diet; brother's military service. Recollections of training and service with British Army in GB, 1950-1951: call up for National Service, 12/1950; basic training at Chester, 1950-1951; role as machine gunner with King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) on Salisbury Plain, 1951; reasons for volunteering for service in Korean War; leave periods; training with Welch Regt in Norfolk. Recollections of operations with 1st Bn Welch Regt, 29th British Infantry Bde, 1st Commonwealth Div in South Korea, 1951-1952: voyage aboard HMT Empire Fowey from GB to South Korea; arrival at Pusan, 11/1951; character of train journey to Seoul. REEL 2 Continues: preparations for front line service; coping with cold weather; rum ration issue and question of effects of alcohol on troops; falling asleep during guard duty in Samichon Valley; digging machine gun pit; providing machine gun cover to patrols; accident in River Imjin; period of leave in Ebisu Camp, Tokyo, Japan, 4/1952-5/1952 including sight of Japanese Communist Party demonstration, 1/5/1952 and behaviour of prostitutes; methods of saving effort of carrying loads up Hill 355; story of finding United States Army soldier's trousers. REEL 3 Continues: alarm caused by explosion set off by animal; contact with Koreans especially relations between troops and porters; Chinese People's Volunteer artillery attacks on battalion positions on Hill 335; state of health including bout of malaria on return to GB, 1953; attitude to having served in Korean War; fate of two NCOs from his machine gun section; question of promotion of Englishmen to NCO in battalion; membership of unit choir on board HMT Empire Fowey; reading of poem he wrote about Hill 169; level of morale; degree of contact with United Nation troops; thwarted attempt to join Canadian Army. REEL 4 Continues: level of battalion casualties.
