Content description

REEL 1 Background in London, GB, 1933-1939: family circumstances; education. Recollections of period as schoolchild in GB, 1939-1945: evacuations to Oxfordshire and Somerset; German Air Force bombing of family home in Poplar, London; effect of war on education; reaction to German V1 Flying Bomb attacks on Bow, London. Aspects of period with Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) in GB and Germany, 1951-1952: call-up for National Service, 1951; basic training at Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) Regimental Depot, Tower of London; joining motor transport at Iserlohn, Germany; training in Norfolk and Canterbury. Recollections of period as driver with 1st Bn Royal Fusiliers, 28th Commonwealth Infantry Bde, 1st Commonwealth Div in South Korea, 1952-1953: voyage from GB to South Korea, arrival at Pusan; use of American K-rations; driving work; transport of casualties to 60th Indian Parachute Field Ambulance; driving without lights; stand to system; driving for D Coy; American equipment; description of 'Mad Mile'; maintenance of vehicles including lack of anti-freeze.
