REEL 1 Recollections of background in Detroit, United States, GB and Ireland, 1913-1933: family circumstances and origins; Sein Fein raid on family home, 1921; education at Harrow School. Aspects of period as officer cadet at Royal Military College Sandhurst, Camberley, 1931-1932: reasons for going to Royal Military College Sandhurst; choosing to be an under-officer. Recollections of period as officer with Hodson's Horse (4th Duke of Cambridge's Own), British Indian Army in India, 1933-1941: initial attachment to King's Shropshire Light Infantry; transfer to regiment; characteristics of three classes in unit; relations between officers and men; regimental pride; observing Thursday holidays; method employed to deal with Redshirts; cavalry training at Sialkot; anticipation of coming war. REEL 2 Continues: hearing news of declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; use of camels for communications; marriage in India, 1941. Aspects of period as staff officer with British Indian Army in Iraq and India, 1942-1943: role as staff captain with 2nd Indian Armoured Brigade in Iraq; posting to Staff College, Quetta, India.
