REEL 1 Background in Lingen an der Ems, Germany, 1923-1933: family; education. Aspects of period as schoolchild in Lingen an der Em and Berlin, Germany, 1933-1941: impact of Nazism on education; childhood; attending synagogue; increase in anti-Semitism after 1933; attending Jewish school in Berlin; arrest of father during Kristallnacht, 9/11/1938-10/11/1938; release of father from concentration camp; effect of regime on education; employment in Berlin after finishing education; question of German identity. Recollections of period as inmate in Riga Ghetto, Latvia, 12/1941-11/1943: deportation from home; conditions during train journey; description of march to ghetto; occupying houses of recently executed Latvian Jewish inmates; medical services.
