Content description

REEL 1 Background in GB, 1916-1937: family; education; reasons for enlistment in Coldstream Guards, 1937. Aspects of period with 3rd Bn Coldstream Guards, 1st Guards Bde in Egypt, 1939-1941: move into Western Desert. Recollections of operations with Guards Patrol, Long Range Desert Group in North Africa, 1941-1943: reasons for joining unit at Abbassia Barracks, Cairo; attack by Italian Air Force aircraft which officer was killed; pursuit by Deutsches Afrika Corps armoured cars and guiding his patrol through minefield; work with Special Air Service; problems crossing desert; ration supply; exchange of Lewis Gun for Bren Gun; amusing mishap with bunch of grapes. REEL 2 Continues: Recollections of operations with Long Range Desert Group in Kalinos Island, Dodecanese Islands, Greece, 1943: Paddy Mayne's persuading him to go to Dodecanese Islands; escape from Kalinos Island aboard motor torpedo boat; relations with Greeks. Reflections on period as guardsman with Coldstream Guards, 1938-1944: duties as officer's servant at Guards Training Depot, Pirbright, GB, 1944; service 3rd Bn Coldstream Guards during Arab Revolt in Palestine, 1938-1939 including relations with Jewish settlers at Rehovot; post-war career.
