REEL 1 Aspects of period as civilian in Hoylake, GB, 1939-1941: reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; role as police messenger in Hoylake, GB, 1939-1940; membership of 17th (Heswall) Bn Cheshire Home Guards in Hoylake. Aspects of period as enlistment and training with Border Regiment in GB, 1941-1943: call-up for military service, 1941; story for reasons for posting to India, 1941; reasons for short posting to Reconnaissance Regiment in Porthcawl; background to enlistment two years under age. Recollections of operations as private with 9th Bn Border Regt, 48th Indian Infantry Bde, 17th Indian Infantry Div in India and Burma, 1943-1944: sight of Chindits at Deolali, India; sight of victims of Bengal famine; move to Fort White via Kennedy Peak, Burma; Imperial Japanese Army sniper activity at Fort White, Burma; withdrawal to Imphal, India; story of wounding at Black Ridge, Imphal, India, 2/1944; evacuation by mule to Imphal, India; hospitalisation in India, 1944.
