REEL 1 Background in Spaxton and Marshfield GB, 1921-1939: family; education. Aspects of period as civilian in Marshfield, GB, 1939-1942: reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; membership of Marshfield Local Defence Volunteers and 6th (South Gloucestershire) Bn Gloucestershire Home Guard, 6/1940-2/1942 including role and duties, German Air Force bombs which fell on area and nature of training. Aspects of period as private with Devonshire Regiment in GB, 1942: call-up for military service, 2/1942; basic training at Bodmin; reaction to basic training; draft to 11th Bn Devonshire Regt at Looe; contracting jaundice; move to Banbridge, Northern Ireland. Recollections of operations with as private with 1st Bn Devonshire Regt, 80th Indian Infantry Bde, 20th Indian Infantry Div in India, 1943-1944: voyage aboard HMT Staffordshire and HMT City of Paris from GB to India; jungle training; journey across India; nature of lorry journey on Manipur Road; role of battalion in defence of Imphal; role of Guerilla Platoon; impressions of Nippon Hill; Royal Air Force Hawker Hurricane attack on Nippon Hill; wounding in leg during attack on Nippon Hill, 11/4/1944.
