Content description

REEL 1 Background in Wallasey, GB, 1908-1932: family; education; appearance of Imperial German Navy Zeppelins over the Wirral during First World War; celebrations, Armistice Day, 11/11/1918; clerical employment in Liverpool, 1920s; early interest in wireless. Aspects of period as civilian with Royal Naval Wireless Auxiliary Reserve in Liverpool, GB, 1932-1939: joining Royal Naval Wireless Auxiliary Reserve, 1932; establishing a training centre; refusal of permission to train at HMS Eagle, Liverpool until 1938; Royal Naval Wireless Auxiliary Reserve activity, 1932-1939; acquiring equipment and it's loss in German Air Force bombing in Second World War; contact with Royal Naval Wireless Auxiliary Reserve branch in Chester; occasions when he went to sea pre-1939 including impression of conditions aboard HMS Hood and trip to The Solent, 1937. REEL 2 Continues: mobilisation for Munich Crisis at Devonport, 9/1938; meeting with W D Mills; call-up to Royal Navy and volunteering for interception work. Aspects of operations as petty officer aboard HMS Evadne in Irish Sea, 4/1940-7/1942: shooting down of German Air Force aircraft over Holyhead, 5/1941; German Air Force bombs which hit promenade at Holyhead, 5/1941.
