Content description

REEL 1 Background in Leeds, GB, 1930-1939: family; education. Aspects of period as schoolchild in Leeds, GB, 1939-1945: German Air Force attacks on city; use of cellars as air raid shelters; belief in Allied victory; dried rations. Aspects enlistment and training with British Army in GB and Northern Ireland, 2/1948-8/1948: reasons for joining British Army, 2/1948; basic training at Palace Barracks, Holywood, Northern Ireland; recruit who wanted to get out of military service. Recollections of operations with 3 Platoon, A Coy, 1st Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Malaya Command, 11/1948-8/1951: voyage aboard HMT Empire Windrush from GB to Singapore, 10/1948-11/1948; arrival in Singapore, 11/1948; shots fired at train travelling between Singapore and Butterworth, 11/1948; move to Bandar; shots fired into soldier's accommodation at Bandar; discovery of wounded Malaya National Liberation Army insurgent; anti-British attitude of civilians in Chinese squatter area around Junjong; conditions in jungle and contracting dysentery. REEL 2 Continues: recovering from bout of dysentery; breaking fingers on jungle patrol; abscess he got from leech bite; sleeping in jungle; discovery of Malaya National Liberation Army ambush and killing of two insurgents left as rearguard; Malaya National Liberation Army attack on unit's camp at Papan; attitude towards Malaya National Liberation Army insurgents; discovery of mutilated and booby-trapped bodies of Federation of Malaya policemen killed by Malaya National Liberation Army at Klian Intan; length of jungle patrols; unit morale and quality of leadership; geographical variation in Malaya National Liberation Army insurgent activity; character of Malay people; attitude to leaving Federation of Malaya, 8/1951.
