British officer served with 2nd Bn Green Howards (Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regt) in India and Shanghai, China, 1930-1934; served as staff officer with British Expeditionary Force in France and GB, 5/1940-6/1940; movements officer served with Movement Control (British) during planning of Operation Overlord in GB, 1943-1944

Content description

REEL 1 Background in GB, 1905-1922: family; education. Aspects of period as officer with 2nd Bn Green Howards (Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regt) in India and Shanghai, China, 1930-1934: attending Royal Military College Sandhurst, Camberley, 1922-1924. prior to joining 2nd Bn Green Howards (Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regt), 1924; polo ponies used in Shanghai, China. Recollections of period as staff officer with British Expeditionary Force in France and GB, 5/1940-6/1940: attitude of troops to having to hand over their weapons at Dunkirk, France; role handling troops returning from Dunkirk Evacuation at Folkestone, GB; conditions of troops arriving in Folkestone, GB; attitude to continuing war against Germans; memories of General Bernard Montgomery. Recollections as staff officer with Movement Control (British) during planning of Operation Overlord in GB, 1943-1944: attempt to deceive Germans about crossing English Channel; opinion of work of DUKWs. REEL 2 Continues: waterproofing of tanks; work on marshalling and loading; problems caused by postponement; later role with Headquarters, Allied Control Commission, Germany, British Zone of Occupation, Bad Oeynhausen, Germany, 1945-1948.
