Aspects of period as schoolchild in Sheffield, 9/1939-5/1945: question of personal morale and taking shelter during German Air Force raids; German Air Force land-mine which fell near family home; effects of rationing; home schooling; VE Day celebrations, 8/5/1945. Aspects of training as private with British Army, 1949: call-up for National Service, 5/6/1949; reaction to basic training; nature of basic training at Bordon Camp, 6/1949-7/1949; issue of sea kitbags, 12/1949. Recollections of operations as private with 1 Platoon, A Coy, 1st Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Malaya Command in Federation of Malaya, 12/1949-5/1951: arrival in Federation of Malaya, 12/1949; method of securing air supply drops; origins of men in unit; coping with climate and pests; opening fire on suspected Malayan National Liberation Army insurgents in Kuala Krau area; his shooting of Min Yuen supplying food to insurgents in Sungei Siput area; pursuit of Malayan National Liberation Army insurgents near border with Thailand; circumstances of Kuala Krau incident when suspected Malayan National Liberation Army insurgents turned out to be kampong guards; fellow soldier who was killed in accident; reaction to operating in Federation of Malaya; D-Coy casualties in suspected Malayan National Liberation Army insurgent ambush.
