British officer served aboard HMS Saumarez during Corfu Incident in Corfu Channel, 10/1946; served as intelligence officer with Naval Intelligence, Royal Navy in Singapore, Federation of Malaya, 1950-1952; served as Naval Force Logistics Officer during Operation Musketeer in Mediterranean, 10/1956-11/1956; served as Captain of Far East Fleet during Indonesian Confrontation, 1964-1966

Content description

REEL 1 Recollections of period as officer aboard HMS Saumarez in GB and Mediterranean, 1945-1946: appointment to ship as First Lieutenant at Plymouth, GB, 12/1945; opinion of Captain William Selby; joining Mediterranean Fleet, 4/1946; start of Palestine patrol duties to detect illegal immigrants; methods employed to intercept immigrant ships. Recollections of Corfu Incident aboard HMS Saumarez in Corfu Channel, 10/1946: nature of dispute with Albania over use of Corfu Channel; mining of ship in Corfu Channel; aftermath of incident and casualties. REEL 2 Continues: question of effect on morale over incident. Aspects of period as officer aboard HMS Troubridge in Mediterranean, 1946-1947: joining ship in Malta; further Palestine patrol duties; provision of guard ship by Royal Navy in Pola, Italy and Free Territory of Trieste, 1947; question of greater psychological effect of casualties in peacetime than in wartime; attending a Papal audience with other HMS Saumarez survivors, Vatican, 1947; administrative duties at HMS Daedalus, Royal Naval Air Station, Lee-on-Solent, GB, 1947. Aspects of period as student at Staff College in Camberley, 1948 including specialising in combined operations. Recollections of period as officer with Naval Intelligence in Singapore, Federation of Malaya, 1950-1952: duties including acting as Aide-de-Camp to Governor during Maria Hertogh Riots; nature of intelligence work. REEL 3 Continues: degree to which his duties concerned Malayan Emergency; question of level piracy off north eastern coast of British Borneo; process of security vetting; contribution of Royal Navy to suppression of insurrection in Federation of Malaya. Recollections of period as Naval Force Logistics Officer of Task Force 345 during Operation Musketeer in Mediterranean, 10/1956-11/1956: problems posed by changes in political considerations; problems encountered in execution of logistical supply for operation; reaction to hearing Royal Air Force V bombers were taking off for Egypt, 11/1956; going ashore in conspicuous white uniform at Port Said, Egypt, 11/1956. REEL 4 Continues: question of Operation Musketeer being a political fiasco but a military success. Recollections of period as Captain of Far East Fleet during Indonesian Confrontation, 1964-1966: appointment to role, 1964; nature of Indonesian Confrontation; role and duties especially care of naval staff and wives; size of Commonwealth forces deployed; low-level of casualties; attitude to having been involved in training and in peace keeping duties during Royal Navy career.
