REEL 1 Background in Musselburgh, GB, 1936-1945: family; education. Aspects of period as private with 1st Bn Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, Duke of Albany's), 6th Infantry Bde Group in GB and West Germany, 1957-1961: reaction to basic training; posting to 1st Bn Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, Duke of Albany's) in Münster, West Germany; story of state of Münster, Germany under the Nazi regime, 1933-1945; amalgamation of Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, Duke of Albany's) with Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders to form Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons) in Edinburgh, 7/2/1961. Recollections of operations as private with 1st Bn Queen's Own Highlanders in Brunei, British Borneo, 12/1962: news of Brunei Revolt; nature of anti-pirate patrols carried out by unit; casualties amongst 1/7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles who had been equipped only with riot gear; orders for A Coy to capture Anduki Airfield; opinion of pilot of Blackburn Beverley aircraft disembarking troops; capture of Anduki Airfield; capture of Seria. REEL 2 Continues: capture of Panaga, Kuala Belait and Sultan's Palace; use of Iban trackers to find insurgent arms cache; single casualty in unit; use of informers to identify insurgents. Recollections of operations as private with 1st Bn Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons) during Indonesian Confrontation in British Borneo, 1962-1963: patrols and contact with Indonesian forces; method of sleeping in jungle; anti-ambush tactics; tactics employed in laying ambushes; story of how smell of chocolate gave Gurkha ambush away in Malaysia; reaction to lying in ambush; opinion of supply arrangements; periods over which unit carried out patrols; intelligence gathering role of Special Air Service; joint sweep with Gurkhas against Indonesian forces.
