REEL 1 Background in Midsummer Norton, GB, 1920-1939: family; education; employment as miner in coalfields in Somerset, 1934-1939; joining 4th Bn Somerset Light Infantry, Territorial Army as bugler, 1935. Recollections of period as NCO with 4th Bn Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's), 129th Infantry Bde, 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Div, GB, 1939-1944: mobilisation, 8/1939; guard duties at Havant; reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939. REEL 2 Continues: coastal defence duties; opinion that GB would fight on after fall of France, 6/1940. Recollection of period as NCO with B Coy, 4th Bn Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's Own), 129th Infantry Bde, 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Div, Normandy, France, 6/1944-8/1944: preparations for Operation Overlord in GB, 1944; embarkation, 6/1944; landing on Gold Beach at Arromanches-les-Bains, 16/6/1944; nature of German forces' resistance; duties as bugler and funerals in field, 6/1944; attack on Hill 112 including German defence against divisional attack, improvement of trenches, promotion to sergeant during action, wounding of comrade, air activity, patrolling, arms and ammunition discipline; opinion of German forces defending Hill 112.
