REEL 1 Background in Berlin, Germany, 1924-1941: family; education; Royal Air Force bombing of Potsdam, winter 1940-1941. Aspects of enlistment and training with German Navy in Germany and Netherlands, 1941-1942: volunteering for navy, 7/1941; parent's opposition to his enlistment; basic training at Ede, Netherlands, 1941; attending signals course in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, 1942; in transit in Paris, France, early 1942. Recollections of operations as signalman with Harbour Protection Flotilla on Channel Islands, 1942-1945: posting to Guernsey, 3/1942; patrol duties in trawlers; posting to Alderney, 1943; HMS Rodney's bombardment of Alderney, 6/1944. REEL 2 Continues: British civilians remaining on Alderney; receiving four days detention for sending too much money home; Royal Air Force attack on Alderney; contact with kapo from Lager Sylt Concentration Camp, Alderney; attitude towards of Organisation Todt personnel; social contact with civilians on Guernsey; purchasing linseed oil to fry potatoes; volunteering for abortive rescue mission to Normandy, France to aid German forces cut off by Americans, 12/8/1944; food situation after D-Day; surrender, 5/1945. REEL 3 Continues: posting to Casquets Lighthouse after British commando raid, 1943; reaction in garrison on Alderney to D-Day, 6/1944.
