Content description

REEL 1 Background in Bootle, GB, 1913-1939: family; education; employment. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy in GB, 1939-1940: enlistment in Royal Navy, 1939; drafting to HMS Hermes, 1940. Recollections of operations as telegraphist aboard HMS Listrac in English Channel, 8/1940-10/1940: joining ship at Plymouth, 31/8/1940; torpedoing of ship by German torpedo boats Kondor and Falke in English Channel, 11/10/1940; period in sea before rescue, 11/10/1940; ship's guard duties in English Channel, 8/1940-10/1940; further details of rescue and abandoning ship. Recollections of operations as telegraphist aboard HMS Palomares during Convoy PQ17 in Arctic, 27/6/1942-10/7/1942: drafting to fighter direction ship, 1942; attitude to participating in Arctic convoys; German Air Force attacks on convoy. REEL 2 Continues: lack of realisation that order to scatter had been given to convoy; behaviour of Soviet Army troops when they saw parcel of food being passed between British ships at Archangel, Soviet Union, 7/1942; relations with Soviets ashore in Archangel, Soviet Union, 7/1942; purchases made at Archangel, Soviet Union, 7/1942.
