Content description

REEL 1 Background in Bagshot and Lightwater, GB, 1924-1942: family; education; Reserved Occupation in factory making self-sealing petrol tanks at Frimley; reasons for joining Royal Navy, 16/7/1942. Recollections of operations as seaman aboard HMS Activity in GB coastal waters and with 2nd Escort Group in North Atlantic and Arctic, 10/1942-12/1944: drafting to escort carrier at Greenock, GB, 10/1942; role as messenger for batsman; appreciation of problems Fleet Air Arm pilots had landing on deck in River Clyde; operating with 2nd Escort Group in North Atlantic; later convoy in Mediterranean in which welded liberty ships broke their backs in stormy weather, 10/1945; story of purchasing bananas for future wife in Gibraltar, 1944; tactics employed by German submarines during Convoy JW 58, 3/1944-4/1944; German Air Force use of reconnaissance aircraft to spot convoys; lack of ear protection during firing of Oerlikon Guns; ashore at Kola Inlet, Soviet Union; reaction to participation in second Convoy RA 59 in Arctic; how icing of aircraft on flight deck affected operations; injury to arm from aircraft propeller.
