Content description

REEL 1 Background in Stoke Newington, London and Goodmayes, GB, 1918-1939: family; education. Aspects of period as NCO with 9th Bn Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regt in GB, 1939-1942: reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; reaction to call-up to Militia; basic training at Bedford; coastal defence duties at Cromer, 1940-1941; reasons for volunteering for Glider Pilot Regiment; restrictions on fishermen having access to beach at Cromer. Recollections of period as NCO with D Sqdn, No1 Wing, Glider Pilot Regt in GB, 1942-1944: attempts to thwart tests; discipline during initial training at Tilshead; attitude to flying; characteristics of Airspeed Horsa Glider; opinion of airlanding troops. REEL 2 Continues: incident of gliders crashing at Netheravon during exercise; problems of unloading gliders quickly. Aspects of operations as NCO with D Sqdn, No 1 Wing, Glider Pilot Regt in Normandy, France, D-Day, 6/6/1944: landings near Ranville carrying signallers; division of work between first and second pilots; flight and landing near Major-General Richard Gale; return to GB. Recollections of operations as NCO with D Sqdn, No 1 Wing, Glider Pilot Regt during Operation Market Garden, 9/1944: abortive operations to carry American airborne forces prior to Operation Market Garden; concern over balance of load in glider; attitude to carrying flame-throwing equipment; landing and encounter with mental hospital patients; mortar hit on airborne jeep carrying flame-throwing equipment; house-to-house fighting on perimeter.
