REEL 1 Background in Bournemouth, GB, 1932-1949: family; education. German Air Force attacks on Bournemouth area during Second World War. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Marines in GB, 1949-1950: enlistment, 1949; pattern of training including commando training. Recollections of operations as marine with 41 (Independent) Commando, Royal Marines in Japan and Korea, 10/1950-11/1950: voyage with reinforcement draft from GB to Japan via Singapore, Malaya, 1950; preparations with American issued weapons at Camp McGill, Japan; use of small raiding boats; commando raids launched from USS Horace A. Bass (APD-124) and USS Wantuck (APD-125) to cut railway line on North Korean coast. Recollections of operations as marine with 41 (Independent) Commando, Royal Marines in Hagaru-ri, North Korea, 11/1950-12/1950: push to Koto-ri; driving into Chinese ambush, 29/11/1950. REEL 2 Continues: escape from ambush into Hagaru-ri; arrival at Hagaru-ri suffering from frostbite; attacks by Chinese People's Volunteer Army; evacuation flight out of Hagaru-ri Camp; aspects of escape from ambush on way to Hagaru-ri, 29/11/1950; memories of demoralised American chaplain; later sea service as marine aboard HMS Birmingham, off Korea, 1952-1954. Recollections of operations with 42 Commando, Royal Marines during Operation Musketeer at Port Said, Egypt, 11/1956: drafting to unit at Royal Marine Depot, Lympstone, GB, 10/1956; storming ashore under fire at Port Said, 6/11/1956; incident of grenade thrown by child; mission to French Embassy; failure to armour vehicles; actions of French Foreign Legion at Port Said; reaction to calling off of Operation Musketeer; sight of United States submarine during Operation Musketeer.
