REEL 1 Background in Kingston upon Hull, GB, 1918-1939: family; education. Aspects of period as seaman with Humber Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in GB, 1938-1939: reasons for joining; gunnery training at Chatham, 1939; story of Tom Boyd punching leading seaman for baiting young recruit; accommodation and duties; misuse of railway tickets on journey between Chatham and Kingston upon Hull. Recollections of period as seaman aboard with HMS Curacoa, Home Fleet in North Sea and Norway, 1/1940-8/1942: drafting to ship, 1/1940; sight of mass of shipping in River Humber; ship's duties as anti-aircraft guard ship in Norway, 4/1940; breaking of leg in accident with paravane; recovery from injury and return to ship; duties on board ship.
