REEL 1 Recollections of period as radio officer aboard SS Frances Massey in Mediterranean, 1939: background to joining Merchant Navy, 1938; joining ship, 10/1939; carrying coal from Kingston upon Hull, GB to Alexandria, Egypt; loading cottonseed in Alexandria, Egypt; problems negotiating Humber Estuary on return; reasons for leaving sea service on return to GB. Recollections of period as radio officer aboard SS Queen City in North Atlantic, 1940: character of voyage to Baltimore, US; loading gunpowder during thunderstorm in Baltimore Harbour, US; near collision with tanker on return convoy; medical problems encountered with Merchant Navy diet. Recollections of period as radio officer aboard SS New Westminster City in North Atlantic and Arctic, 2/1942-4/1942: amount of danger money offered for Arctic service; background to joining ship at Kingston upon Hull, GB, 2/1942; fitting out ship for Arctic service; loading war supplies.
