REEL 1 Background in Dublin, Ireland and GB, 1911-1928: family; education. Outline of training and service with Royal Navy, 1929-1939. Recollections of operations as officer aboard HMS Cairo in North Sea and Norway, 9/1939-6/1940: reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; degree of ship's efficiency, 9/1939; role of anti-aircraft cruiser; false alarm about German convoy off Netherlands, late 1939; action against German aircraft in GB coastal waters, 1939; work protecting HMS Nelson at Loch Ewe, 12/1939; convoy escort duties during Norwegian campaign; damage to ship and casualties during Norwegian campaign; opinion of success against German Air Force; opinion of quality of Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve personnel on board. Recollections of operations as officer aboard HMS Coventry in GB coastal waters and Mediterranean, 7/1940-9/1941: joining cruiser, 7/1940; minelaying operations in North Sea; transfer to Alexandria, Egypt, 9/1940; operations in Mediterranean, 1940-1941; torpedoing of ship by Italian submarine Naiad, 13/12/1940.
