REEL 1 Background in Canada, 1907-1936: political influences; influence of family friend on his reading; anti-colonialist views; employment on farms; joining Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), 1923; joining Communist Party of Canada whilst merchant seaman; involvement in labour movement in Vancouver and Regina during 1930s. Aspects of journey from Canada to Spain via GB, 1936: journey to Spain via GB during Spanish merchant seaman strike; stowing away aboard Spanish merchant ship in Cardiff, GB; initial impressions of Bilbao, Spain, 7/1936. Aspects of period as volunteer with Columna Ochandiano and Columna Perezagua, Spanish Republican Militia in Spain, 7/1936-4/1937: contact with Communist Party of Spain on arrival in Bilbao; joining Columna Ochandiano. REEL 2 Continues: participation in fighting in San Sebastian and Irun. Aspects of period as machine gunner with Machine Gun Coys, George Washington Bn and Mackenzie-Papineau Bn, XV International Bde in Spain, 5/1937-2/1938: background to joining International Bdes; pattern of service; age and character of International Bdes volunteers; opinion of clash between Italians fighting for Republican and Nationalist forces; wounding and evacuation to France, 1938. Aspects of period as civilian worker in GB, 1939-1945: political and work activities on return to GB; changing attitude towards Communist Party during Second World War.
