REEL 1 Background in Romsey and Bournemouth, GB, 1932-1951: family; education; German Air Force attacks on Bournemouth during Second World War. Aspects of period as NCO with 1st Bn Royal Hampshire Regt in GB and Germany, 11/1951-12/1953: call-up to National Service to Plumer Barracks, Plymouth, 11/1951; reasons for not being selected for officer training; attitude towards conscription and decision to become a regular soldier; attractions of serving in Germany; reaction of German farmers to damage to their properties during military exercises. Recollections of operations as NCO with 1st Bn Royal Hampshire Regt, 18th Independent Infantry Bde Group and 26th Gurkha Infantry Bde in Federation of Malaya, 1/1954-8/1956: posting to Federation of Malaya, 12/1953; voyage from GB to Federation of Malaya, 12/1953-1/1954; reasons for regimental nickname 'The Cardboard Cavaliers'; arrival at Nee Soon Camp; jungle training at Jungle Warfare School, Kota Tinggi; precautions taken to prevent insurgent sabotage of railways; postponement of first ambush at Bentong; duties training new arrivals at Jungle Warfare School, Kota Tinggi, 1954-1955; operational success of Fijian troops; wounding in chest by grenade and subsequent medical treatment; joining D Coy as platoon sergeant.
