REEL 1 Background in Germany, 1921-1933: family; education. Aspects of period as schoolchild in Germany and GB, 1933-1939: his father's attitude towards Nazi regime; his transfer from Jesuit school in Germany to Gorndonstoun School in Scotland; volunteering for British Army, 3/9/1939. Aspects of period as internee in GB and Canada, 1940: internment on Isle of Man; removal to Canada. Aspects of period as private with 137 Coy, Pioneer Corps in GB, 1940-1943: return to GB from Canada after call-up for military service. REEL 2 Continues: prior recollection of membership of Hitler Youth in Germany; attitude towards service in Pioneer Corps. Aspects of operations as private with No 3 (X) Troop, No 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando in GB and Normandy, France, 1943-1944: background to volunteering for commandoes; training in North Wales; anticipation that unit would have an airborne role; attachment to No 45 (Royal Marine) Commando, 1st Special Service Bde; memories of Lord Lovat; expectations that unit would not be involved in seaborne landings.
