REEL 1 Background in Fulham, London and Chiswick, GB, 1924-1943: family; education; his interest in politics as schoolchild; presence of Blackshirts of British Union of Fascists in Chiswick area; contact with members of Communist Party of Great Britain in Staines; attitude towards declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; attending Harry Pollitt's open air meeting at time of Nazi-Soviet Pact, 8/1939; reaction to British set backs, 1940; reaction to German attack on Soviet Union, 6/1941; decision to volunteer for British Indian Army, 1943. Aspects of voyage aboard SS John Ericson from GB to India via South Africa, 6/1943-7/1943: start of voyage from Gourock, 6/1943; encounter with racial prejudice in Cape Town, South Africa. REEL 2 Continues: hospitality of civilians to troops in South Africa. Aspects of period as officer cadet with Officer Cadet Training Unit, Bangalore, India, 7/1943-1/1944: initial impressions of poverty in Bombay; pattern of training at Bangalore; sight of sweepers strike in Hyderabad; contact with Indian Communist Party of Indian members in Dehli; reasons for not receiving a commission in Indian Army.
