Aspects of period as student with King's College London in London, GB, 1939-1940: reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; evacuation of college to University of Bristol, 9/1939-10/1939. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Air Force in GB, 1940-1941: volunteering for Royal Air Force, 5/1940; call-up to Royal Air Force, 8/1940; initial training at No 3 Initial Training Wing, RAF at Torquay; German Air Force bombing of RAF Elmdon and RAF Brize Norton; training as flying instructor at No 2 Central Flying School, RAF at RAF Cranwell; German Air Force intruder raids; method of selecting flying instructors; reasons why he did not become an operational pilot; personality types chosen for fighters and bombers. Recollections of period as flying instructor with No 36 Service Flying Training School, RCAF Penhold in Alberta, Canada, 11/1941-11/1943: his transfer to RCAF Penhold, 12/1941; character of Empire Air Training Scheme.
