REEL 1 Background in Germany, 1916-1939: family; education; background to enlistment in German Army, 1935. Aspects of period as officer with 29th Panzer Regt, 12th Panzer Div attached as staff officer to Headquarters, German Army in Poland, 9/1939: joining army headquarters; contact with Soviet Army troops in Poland. Aspects of period as officer with 29th Tank Regt, 12th Panzer Div in France, 5/1940-6/1940: occupation of town of Romagne; reception from Monsieur Courvoisier at Jarnac in Cognac region; impressions of Paris, 1940; story of visit to Paris, summer 1944. Aspects of operations as officer with 29th Tank Regt, 12th Panzer Div in Soviet Union, 6/1941: his wounding in face by shell splinter near Minsk, 6/1941; his attitude to serving in Soviet Union; reaction to first sight of casualty, 22/6/1941.
