British seaman served as torpedoman aboard HMS Glorious in GB coastal waters, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and off Norway, 1935-1940 including sinking in Norwegian Sea, 8/6/1940

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Gateshead, GB, 1915-1930: family; education. Aspects of enlistment and training as boy seaman with HMS Ganges, Shotley, GB, 1930: reasons for enlistment; nature of training at HMS Ganges. Aspects of period as torpedoman aboard HMS Glorious in GB coastal waters and Mediterranean and Indian Ocean, 1935-1940: duties on board aircraft carrier; dangers involved in working with torpedoes; relations between officers and other ranks. Aspects of sinking of HMS Glorious in Norwegian Sea, 8/6/1940: start of attack on ship by German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisnau; his action station; listening to telephone conversations relating to state of ship; orders to abandon ship; method of abandoning ship. Recollections of period in sea after sinking of HMS Glorious in Norwegian Sea, 8/6/1940-10/6/1940: conditions in water; reaching Carley Float. REEL 2 Continues: practising his German on board Carley Float; sight of HMS Acasta attacking Scharnhorst with torpedoes, 8/6/1940; death of survivors on Carley Float; measures he took to stay alive; death of last of the survivors; method of keeping his feet dry; burial of dead; rescue by Norwegian trawler D/S Borgund.
