REEL 1 Background in Kingston upon Hull, GB, 1922-1941: family; education; employment; reaction to declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; membership of 1st East Riding (Hull) Bn, Home Guard, 1940-1941; volunteering for accordion concert party; memories of German Air Force attacks, 5/1941; attitude towards William Joyce 'Lord Haw Haw'. Aspects of enlistment and training as stoker with Royal Navy in GB, 6/1941-9/1941: enlistment and reasons for joining Stoker Branch, 6/1941; call-up to HMS Royal Arthur, Skegness; on charge for not saluting officer. REEL 2 Continues: continuation training at HMS Duke, Great Malvern; drafting to HMS Pembroke, Chatham. Recollections of operations as stoker aboard HMS Bedouin, 6th Destroyer Flotilla in GB coastal waters, Arctic and Mediterranean, 9/1941-6/1942 including sinking off Pantellaria Island, 15/6/1942: drafting to ship at Scapa Flow, GB; daily routine; relations with petty officers; role of ship in Arctic; conditions in boiler room; move to Mediterranean for Operation Harpoon, 6/1942; sinking of ship by Italian cruisers, Raimonda Montecuccoli and Eugenio di Savoia off Pantellaria, 15/6/1942; abandoning ship, 15/6/1942.
