REEL 1 Background in Ilford and Gants Hill, GB, 1923-1939: family; education. Aspects of period as evacuee in Malden, Newent and Chippenham in GB, 1939-1942: pattern of evacuations; treatment by his landlady in Chippenham; attitude of adults towards male evacuees from London area; experiences with landladies in Chippenham; spare time activities; his attitude to potential of fighting Germans. Aspects of period as private attending Inter-Service Japanese Course at School of Oriental and African Studies at London University in London, GB, 1943-1944: background to selection for course; attending physical development course on enlistment in British Army, 1943; Japanese language course, 1943-1944; misbehaviour of students on his course. REEL 2 Continues: other students in Group 9 including Louis Allen.
