British officer served aboard HMS Afridi, 4th Destroyer Flotilla in Mediterranean and GB coastal waters, 9/1939-12/1939; served aboard HMS Cossack, 4th Destroyer Flotilla during Altmark Incident in Norway, 2/1940; served aboard HMS Ark Royal in Mediterranean and North Atlantic, 7/1940-11/1941 including sinking southeast of Gibraltar, 14/11/1941

REEL 1 Background in India and GB, 1908-1927: family; education; reasons for taking public school entry into Royal Navy. Memories of receiving news of Invergordon Mutiny on China Station, 9/1931. Aspects of operations as officer aboard HMS Afridi, 4th Destroyer Flotilla in Mediterranean and GB coastal waters, 9/1939-12/1939: hearing declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1940; opinion of Royal Navy Tribal Class destroyers; convoy escort duties; sight of mining of HMS Belfast in Forth of Firth, 21/11/1939. Recollections of operations as officer aboard HMS Cossack, 4th Destroyer Flotilla during boarding of MV Altmark in Norway, 2/1940: background to joining ship; character of Captain Philip Vian; discovery of the MV Altmark in Jossingfjord; boarding of MV Altmark. REEL 2 Continues: German crews' abandoning of ship; release of prisoners from MV Altmark. Recollections of operations as officer aboard HMS Ark Royal in Mediterranean and North Atlantic, 7/1940-11/1941 including sinking southeast of Gibraltar, 14/11/1941: background to joining ship in Gibraltar, 7/1940; high morale of crew; intensive operational period from Gibraltar; court of enquiry into conduct of Vice-Admiral Sir James Somerville in not chasing Italian Fleet; pursuit of German battleship Bismarck in North Atlantic, 5/1941 including receiving news of sinking of HMS Hood and accidental torpedo attack on HMS Sheffield. REEL 3 Continues: damage to German battleship Bismarck's rudder from aircraft flying from HMS Ark Royal; torpedoing of ship by submarine U-81 and sinking the following day, southeast of Gibraltar, 13/11/1941-14/11/1941. Memories of German V weapon attacks on London, 1944-1945.
