Australian officer served with submarines HMS Porpoise and HMS Thrasher, 1st Submarine Flotilla in Mediterranean, 10/1941-9/1942; commanded submarine HMS H44, 7th Submarine Flotilla in GB coastal waters, 11/1942-2/1943; commanded submarine HMS Sceptre, 3rd Submarine Flotilla in GB coastal waters and North Sea, 2/1943-11/1944; served with Admiralty Signal Establishment at Haslemere, GB, 1944-1946

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Australia, 1919-1937: family; education. Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy in GB, 1937-1939: enlistment; reaction to declaration of Second World War as midshipman aboard HMS Suffolk, 3/9/1939; sense of threat from Japan, 1939; attractions of Submarine Service. Recollections of sinking of SS Britannia and period in life boat in North Atlantic, 3/1941-4/1941: sinking of ship by German auxiliary cruiser Thor (HSK-4) off Freetown, Sierra Leone, 25/3/1941; abandoning ship into lifeboat; conditions during twenty three day period in lifeboat; making landfall in northern Brazil. REEL 2 Continues: aid given from Brazilian Indians; medical treatment for salt water boils; decision of Brazilian authorities not to intern survivors.
