REEL 1 Background in Seven Sisters, GB, 1916-1939: family; education; employment as miner. Aspects of period as NCO with 1st Bn Welch Regt, Middle East Command in Egypt, 1940-1941: voyage from GB to Egypt via South Africa and India, 1940; work escorting Italians prisoners of war in Egypt, 1940-1941. Aspects of operations as NCO with 1st Bn Welch Regt, Creforce on Crete, Greece, 2/1941-5/1941: initial impressions on arrival on Crete, 2/1941; contact with civilians; sight of HMS York sinking in Suda Bay, 18/5/1941; arrival of German paratroopers and gliders, 20/5/1941; intensity of German Air Force attacks on unit; evacuation from Sphakia by Royal Navy; problem with appendicitis during voyage back to Egypt. Aspects of period as NCO with 1st Bn Welch Regt with Eighth Army and 5th Indian Infantry Bde, 4th Indian Infantry Div in North Africa and Sudan, 1941-1943: relations with Indian troops whist serving with 5th Indian Infantry Bde, 1/1942-4/1942 . REEL 2 Continues: medical problems and hospitalisation in Asmara, Sudan; lack of action in North Africa; relations with American troops in Algeria; story of robbing and murder of two comrades in Algeria. Aspects of operations as NCO with 1st Bn Welch Regt, 34th (Welch) Beach Brick, 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Div in Italy, 7/1943-9/1944: preparations for Operation Husky; unopposed landing on Sicily, 7/1943; relations with Italian civilians; sustaining neck wound during mine clearance at Taranto, 9/1943; hospitalisation on Sicily. Aspects of operations as NCO with 2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regt), 3rd Infantry Bde, 1st Infantry Divin Italy, 1944: transfer to unit; fighting at Anzio.
