REEL 1 Background in Warsaw, Congress Poland and Orenburg, Imperial Russian Empire and Soviet Union and Warsaw, Poland, 1912-1939: family; education; his father's internal exile to Orenburg, Imperial Russian Empire, 1912-1913; his patriotic Polish upbringing; escape from Soviet Union to Poland, 1923; fighting between Red and White forces in Orenburg area, 1919. Aspects of period as civil servant in Poland, 9/1939: lack of basic utilities in Warsaw, 9/1939; his duties as civil servant; decision to evacuate civil servants and their files to Romania, 9/1939. Recollections of his arrest and interrogation by Soviet authorities in Poland, 1939-1940: his arrest by Soviet authorities in Tarnopol area.
