REEL 1 Aspects of operations as officer with 1st Bn Rifle Brigade, 2nd Armoured Bde, 1st Armoured Div in North Africa, 1941-1942: background to joining 1st Bn Rifle Brigade in GB, 1940; voyage from GB to Middle East aboard HMT Strathaird, late 1941; problems pitching tents in desert; retreat during German advance, early 1942; taking rations up to unit positions at Gazala, Libya; Indian troops of 13th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers superstition about eclipses; memories of Knightsbridge Box, 6/1942. Recollections of operations as intelligence officer and brigade major with Headquarters, 2nd Armoured Bde, 1st Armoured Div in North Africa, 8/1942-5/1943: appointment to role, 8/1942; losses during Battle of Alam el Halfa, 31/8/1942; his counting German tanks left on battlefield at Alam el Halfa; memories of Major-General Philip 'Pip' Roberts; pursuit of Germans after Battle of El Alamein, autumn, 1942; appointment as brigade major.
