British stoker served aboard HMS Eskimo, 6th Destroyer Flotilla in GB coastal waters, North Sea and Norway, 1938-1940; served aboard ML 118, 2nd Motor Launch Flotilla, Coastal Forces in English Channel, 1941-1942; served aboard ML 423, Coastal Forces in West Indies, 5/1942-12/1943

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Wantage, GB, 1919-1938: family; education. Aspects of operations as stoker aboard HMS Eskimo, 6th Destroyer Flotilla in GB coastal waters and North Sea, 1938-1940: ship's crew; his duties aboard; accident with gun on board, 1938; attempt to rescue floundering submarine HMS Thetis in Liverpool Bay, Irish Sea, 1/6/1939. Recollections of operations as stoker aboard HMS Eskimo, 6th Destroyer Flotilla in Norway, 4/1940-6/1940: move to Norway, 4/1940; sight of H Class destroyers after First Battle of Narvik; narrow escape from torpedoing by German submarine; in action during Second Battle of Narvik, 13/4/1940; loss of ship's bow from torpedo fired from German destroyer Georg Thiele in Ofotfjord; aftermath of torpedoing and aid from other ships; attempt to repair ship in 'Cripple Creek' in Skelfjord; burial of dead; under German Air Force attack and moving around fjords to avoid further attacks. REEL 2 Continues: removal ashore to cheese factory during air attacks; loss of HMS Curlew in Lavangfjord, 26/5/1940; voyage back to GB with aid of HMS Fleetwood, 28/5/1940-4/6/1940; reaction to Hawker Hurricane flypast; story of gypsy's warning of loss of ship. Aspects of operations as stoker aboard ML 118, 2nd Motor Launch Flotilla, Coastal Forces in English Channel, 1941-1942: convoy duties in English Channel; threat of magnetic mines off Deal, winter 1941-1942; work on QF 3 Pounder Gun; transfer to Canada to pick up new motor launch, 5/1942.
