REEL 1 Background in GB, 1916-1939: family; education. Recollections of operations as seaman aboard HMS Renown in Mediterranean and North Atlantic, 3/1941-8/1941: opinion of ship; gaining commission from lower deck; coping with rations; transmitting station duties; scaling the main mast; recreational activities; participation in pursuit of German battleship Bismarck, 5/1941; rude signal sent to HMT Queen Elizabeth; present for Admiral James Somerville; damage to ship in Mediterranean; commissioning, 12/1941. Recollections of operations as officer aboard MTB 83, 22nd Motor Torpedo Boat Flotilla, Coastal Forces in GB coastal waters and North Sea, 5/1942-3/1943: story of Lieutenant Stewart 'Killer' Gould who had his first lieutenants killed whilst serving with him; joining MTB 83; size of flotilla. REEL 2 Continues: routine of actions against German convoys in North Sea; flotilla commander; attitude of crews to minelaying duties; operations off the Netherlands coast; use of motor torpedo boats for intelligence gathering; lightness of armament on motor torpedo boats; superiority of German E-boats to motor torpedo boats; technique for attacks and lack of targets for motor torpedo boats.
