Recollections of training as seaman with Royal Navy at HMS Pembroke, Chatham, GB, 7/1939-1/1940: arrival at barracks; declaration of Second World War, 3/9/1939; anti-aircraft gunnery training; reasons for refusing commission; question of need for discipline in Royal Navy; incident of forcible scrubbing of dirty seaman in later naval service; presence of vermin aboard HMS Carlisle; prior recollection of reaction to attending British Union of Fascists meeting in Kingston-upon-Hull, 1934.
