Aspects of period as student at Nottingham University in GB, 1938-1941: membership of University of Nottingham Officer Training Corps, 1938-1940; joining 1st (Nottingham City) Bn Nottinghamshire Home Guard at University of Nottingham, 1940; duties with Home Guard. Aspects of enlistment and training as seaman at HMS Ganges, Shotley, GB, 8/1941-11/1941: background to volunteering for Royal Navy, 8/1941 including abortive attempt to join Fleet Air Arm; pattern of training.
