British officer served with Royal Air Force Marine Craft Section in English Channel, 1940-1941; prisoner of war in Oflag IX/AH, Spangenburg, Oflag VI-B, Dössel-Warburg, Oflag XXI-B, Schubin, Stalag Luft III, Sagan and Stalag III-A, Luckenwalde in Germany, 5/1941-5/1945

Content description

REEL 1 Aspects of operations as officer with Royal Air Force Marine Craft Section in English Channel, 1939-1940: background to obtaining commission in unit; duties prior to 5/1941; his capture on sinking HSL 143 off Boulogne, France, 8/5/1941. Aspects of period as prisoner of war in France and Germany, 5/1941: initial treatment by Germans; signs of resistance in France and Germany; character of interrogations in France and at Dulag Luft Interrogation Centre, Oberursel, Germany; character of later Gestapo interrogations in various camps. Aspects of period as prisoner of war in Oflag IX/AH, Spangenburg and Oflag VI-B, Dössel-Warburg, Germany, 5/1941-9/1942: internment in Oflag IX/AH, Spangenburg; American Red Cross aid; escape attempt whilst washing; German psychology in following orders. REEL 2 Continues: move to Oflag VI-B, Warburg; reasons for low morale in camp; contact with home; importance of comradeship; attempt of Germans to form Jewish prisoner of war ghetto in camp; behaviour of chaplains.
