REEL 1 Aspects of enlistment and training wiith Royal Marines: reasons for enlistment; decision to learn to fly with Royal Marines, 1961. Recollections of operations as officer with 40 Commando, Royal Marines, 3rd Commando Bde in Cyprus, 1958: arrival in Cyprus; patrolling in Troodos Mountains; importance of advice given to junior officers by experienced NCOs; opinion of professionalism of Royal Marines doing National Service; relations with civilians; problem of intelligence gathering. Recollections of operations as helicopter pilot with 845 Naval Air Sqdn, Fleet Air Arm in Brunei, Sarawak and Borneo, Malaysia during Indonesian Confrontation, 1963-1964: squadron's joining HMS Albion; orders to proceed to Brunei; duel role of unit; reception in Kuching, Sarawak. REEL 2 Continues: question of fatigue; difficulties encountered in rescuing lost patrol; problems of landing in jungle; incident when helicopter malfunctioned; attitude to working with Gurkhas; degree of danger in operating over jungle terrain; role and duties; contact with indigenous people; types of work engaged in including picking up Special Air Service patrols, attacking Indonesian porters and removal of dead bodies; hearts and minds work; machine gunning of Indonesian porters.
